Curator Tatiane Schilaro talks about the new work of Mano Penalva, Desenhos Interessados, developed during his two-month-stay at AnnexB’s Residency Program.
Penalva's “social drawings” consisted in building a simple arrangement: using empty plastic water bottles that he collected while living in the city, he organized them next to each other, “drawing” a line at each public space he chose to perform. This line “walked” across the space: one of the performance’s rules was that Penalva had to pick a bottle from the end of the row, placing it at the other end. When performing it in the enclosed space of a park, for example, Penalva repeated the action of moving the plastic bottles until his drawing led him to exit that particular space. Park goers who observed the performance do not only looked at Penalva’s action, but they started to pay attention to what they could do with those overlooked objects, creating new relationships between culture and what had been a simple commodity.
